Creative Freedom For Good

Hello.

My blog topic centers around the relationship between the artist and the producer. When working with an artist(or ‘client’), it is important for me as the music producer, to give the artist a certain amount of creative freedom. A lot of music producers like to take on too much control, rather than staying in their lane and doing what they are essentially, paid to do, which is bringing the artists’ song to life.

Being the songwriter, means being the original visionary. The initial vision came to the artist, who in the end, just wants their vision to ‘come to to life’ through their skilled artistry. As an artist myself, and as a music producer, I’ve experienced both sides of the fence. While both sides have good intentions, the client has to be in a position where they feel like they are in control of their song.

Artistic expression, especially through music, brings a sense of freedom to the artist. It’s a freedom that can’t be duplicated by anything material or physical. Instead, it’s importance lies within the tonality and the emotional flow of the song. The songwriter may have an ear for a certain ‘intended’ dynamics, that the producer may not hear. A lot of times, this is the case. When the artists or songwriter brings their song to the music producer, the producer is then responsible to deliver that vision, through the eyes(and ears) of the songwriter. The songwriter, or the original visionary, will feel a lot more comfortable and will likely return for a future collaboration. - Po
